Reasons to Schedule an Eye Exam
Clear vision is only one part of eye health. During a comprehensive examination, your eye doctor can assess how well you see and examine areas inside the eye that cannot be evaluated simply by noticing how your vision feels. Some eye diseases begin without obvious warning signs, so an examination may reveal changes before they become noticeable in everyday life.
Blurry or changing vision
Red, swollen or painful eyes
Difficulty seeing clearly with glasses or contacts
Concerns about an eye condition
Risk factors for eye disease
Routine monitoring of your eye health
How often you need a dilated eye exam depends on factors such as your age, health and risk for eye disease. Your eye doctor can recommend an appropriate schedule.
Who May Need a Dilated Eye Exam?
Dilated eye exams can help detect eye diseases before they cause noticeable vision changes. Your individual need for dilation and the recommended frequency of examinations can depend on your age, medical history and risk factors.
Your eye doctor may consider factors such as:
Your age
Family history of eye disease
Diabetes
High blood pressure
Existing eye conditions
Changes in your vision
When Should You See an Eye Doctor?
Schedule an eye exam if you experience blurry vision, eye redness, swelling or pain, or if your vision remains out of focus even with glasses or contact lenses. You should also see an eye doctor if you are concerned about a possible vision problem or eye disease.
Patients with diabetes may also need regular diabetic eye exams to check for diabetic retinopathy.
What Does a Comprehensive Dilated Eye Exam Check?
Different parts of an eye exam provide information about your vision and eye health. The tests included can vary depending on your individual needs.
Visual Acuity
Reading letters at different distances helps your eye doctor check how clearly you see.

Eye Pressure and Side Vision
Tonometry measures pressure inside the eye, while visual field testing evaluates peripheral, or side, vision.

Inside the Eye
Dilating drops widen the pupils so your eye doctor can examine structures inside the eye. Dilation can help identify signs of conditions including diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration.

What Happens During an Eye Exam?
The specific tests performed during an eye exam depend on your eyes and individual needs. A comprehensive dilated examination may include several tests that evaluate how you see and different aspects of your eye health.
Your Eye Examination
A comprehensive dilated exam may include:

-
Visual acuity testing
-
Visual field testing
-
Eye muscle function testing
-
Pupil response testing
-
Eye pressure measurement
-
Examination after pupil dilation
Your ophthalmologist may perform other tests depending on your needs.
What Happens With Dilation?
Eye drops are used to widen your pupils, allowing your ophthalmologist to see more of the inside of your eyes. This can help check the retina and other structures for signs of eye disease.
After Your Eye Exam
If your eyes are dilated, your vision may be blurry and your eyes may be more sensitive to light for several hours afterward. Sunglasses can help with light sensitivity. You may also want to arrange for someone to drive you home after a dilated examination.

If the examination identifies signs of an eye condition, your ophthalmologist can discuss appropriate next steps.
Important to Know
Seeing clearly does not necessarily mean that your eyes are free from disease. Some conditions, including glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, can develop without obvious early symptoms, which is one reason comprehensive dilated eye exams can be important.
